Middle school students from three Langley schools showcased their creativity, technical skills and more at the District’s Develop the Future event, where ‘future-ready’ skills were highlighted and innovation took centre stage.

At the event, held earlier this month at the Langley Events Centre, middle school students from Peter Ewart Middle School, Yorkson Creek Middle School and Alex Hope Elementary designed and built their own mobile apps, demonstrating not only their imagination but also their ability to apply emerging technology in meaningful ways; students were tasked with coming up with apps that would solve a real-world problem.

“We really want to give students opportunities to develop skills they’re going to use in multiple domains in their life,” said District teacher Victoria Lindgren-Streicher.

With guidance from their classroom teachers as well as District teachers from the Instructional Services department, students began their app development process back in January, and hit various benchmarks along the way, all culminating in the LEC-hosted event. The result was a wide range of creative apps, each reflecting the unique interests and talents of the students behind them.

In addition to pitching their app prototypes, students also took part in a coding workshop at the event.

The event also gave each student the chance to show off, or pitch, their app to their classmates, teachers, parents and others in attendance. Participants demonstrated how their creations worked, explained the purpose behind their ideas, and discussed the challenges they overcame along the way. These presentations not only celebrated student achievement but also helped build confidence and public speaking skills.

“I think the kids are proud of what they’ve created,” Lindgren-Streicher said. “They’re excited to come here and share what it is they’ve done throughout the last six months, and to just have a community come together around them to celebrate their showcase.”
