As we end the calendar year and start winter break, I want to take this opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments as schools and as a collective community. December is always a busy time in and outside of the classroom. Having visited schools in the last few weeks, I have seen all the wonderful events and initiatives taking place around us to raise spirits and help build community. From putting on school performances, organizing pancake breakfasts, to collecting charitable donations, I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone for their part in supporting our students and members of the Langley community. We recognize that the holidays are a time for happiness, but we also know that it can be a difficult time for students, families, and staff for a variety of reasons. The compassion and generosity that is seen and felt in our schools is appreciated. My hope is for everyone to be able to experience peace, comfort, and joy during the break and into the new year.

Online School Registration

Looking ahead to January, the District will open Kindergarten registration for the 2026-2027 school year. Registration for Kindergarten and elementary school intake for entry in September 2026 will continue online beginning on January 5. At the same time, the District will be expanding online school registration to middle and secondary schools for any new students. Registration online aims to streamline processes for schools, making it easier and efficient for school staff and families. The District appreciates your cooperation during this shift in our system. Willoughby Slope Catchment Changes

The District, together with schools, will be reviewing catchment boundaries in the Willoughby Slope, because of the building of a new middle and secondary school in the Smith neighbourhood, which is currently underway. Beginning in January, the District will be holding meetings in schools in the Willoughby Slope to consult with communities before making decisions about catchment boundaries. As has been the case during past consultations, District staff listen and take all feedback into consideration, often making operational changes based on suggestions from the community. We are excited and pleased to be able to hear from everyone to help us come up with plans that will support our learners now and in the future. For more information about this process, please visit the District website here

The Ministry of Education and Child Care is sharing a year end letter to the community which can be read here. The Langley Board of Education is also sending a positive message to Langley students, staff, and families as we approach winter break. You can read Board Chair Candy Ashdown’s message here

On behalf of the District, I extend our warmest wishes for a joyful holiday season. May this time bring you rest, renewal, and meaningful moments with your loved ones.

Sincerely,

Mal Gill
Superintendent of Schools

Wishing you a safe, healthy, and happy holiday!
