At the elementary school level, the following below are examples of information that parents/guardians can expect to learn from their student’s learning updates. To return to the Communicating Student Learning (CSL) webpage, click here.

  • What is a Student Inclusive Conference?

A student inclusive conference is an approximately half an hour meeting involving the student, teacher, and parent/guardian to discuss student progress. There will be time dedicated at the conference for the student to share evidence of their learning in the term – samples, photos, portfolios etc. – and for all parties to discuss areas of strength and areas for growth.  During the conference, the student, teacher, and parent/guardian will co-develop a goal for the next term of learning for the student and identify a plan for all parties to help support that goal.

All elementary schools in the Langley School District have student inclusive conferences which take the place of two formal learning updates.

  • What is a Proficiency Scale?

The use of the proficiency scale gives students and parents/guardians a clear understanding of what students can do now and areas for future growth. A proficiency scale is used to describe student learning based on a teacher’s professional judgement according to expectations for the grade level and time of year. This information is included in a child’s learning update. Below is the proficiency scale used for students in grades K-9.

  • What is Self-reflection on Core Competencies?

Written learning updates may include self-reflection on Core Competencies and goal setting. Self-reflection is when your child thinks deeply about the skills they have developed and how they can continue to grow those skills. Students will be reflecting on their communication, thinking, personal and social skills (Core Competencies). When students reflect on the competencies, they become actively engaged in their learning. Students will also be setting goals. As they set goals and work toward them, students will start to shape their future. When they are faced with a problem, they will learn how to find creative solutions, instead of getting stuck.
