Langley School District Energy Conservation Efforts Pay Off

Langley, BC – Langley School District has been recognized as one of BC Hydro’s Top 10 Power Smart customers in BC and the Top Power Smart Customer in the Education Sector for its level of engagement in energy efficient projects, Power Smart Program offerings and Energy Manager participation.

The Langley School District began an aggressive campaign to save money on power consumption by investigating energy conservation projects and received significant support from BC Hydro in the form of subsidized Technical consultants who conducted energy savings studies and identified several opportunities for greater efficiency. Recently completed major projects include replacing lighting and fixtures in nearly all District buildings with energy efficient LED lighting, occupancy sensors that automatically turn off lighting when not needed and sensors that monitor energy consumption in real time. Consumption has been reduced by 582,000 kw/hrs for a savings of about $50,000 – the equivalent of running two entire school buildings.

Secretary Treasurer David Green said, “energy conservation policies and strategic planning will help the District realize these savings year after year” and, in fact, the District has already set conservation goals that target saving an additional 500,000 kw/hrs in the current year.

Karen Wagner, the District Energy Manager, a position partially funded by BC Hydro, says that the next step is to get the staff and students more involved through education and training. With 19,000 students and 2,500 staff turning off lights and becoming more ‘conservation aware’, the monetary savings will continue to grow. Ms. Wagner was presented a plaque by Key Account Manager of BC Hydro Wayne Cousins at the October Board of Education Regular meeting who commented that a lot of the District’s success in the program has been “…largely due to the work of Karen and her team”.
