Yorkson Creek Middle School unveils button blanket
May 25, 2017
Students from Yorkson Creek Middle gathered in assembly in the school atrium for the unveiling of the school’s button blanket. The ceremony opened with drumming before the blanket was officially unveiled.
The blanket was designed by Mrs. Roberts with the help of Mrs. Akai and other staff. It was mounted on cedar and hung in the atrium.
Over 700 students participated in sewing the buttons onto the blanket. It took three months to complete.
The pattern of the wolf was chosen as a symbol for a pack, and as a storyteller. Students were encouraged to remember that they are a pack themselves, and they are strongest when they are together. They were also encouraged to pass on the story of the blanket.
The celebration closed with words of thanks and tokens of gratitude awarded to the school’s aboriginal support workers.
