Willoughby Slope Consultation Fall Update
September 8, 2015
To the Parent/Guardians of the RE Mountain Family of Schools
Dear Parent/Guardians:
Welcome to the 2015-16 school year with a special welcome to those families new to the community and the Langley School District. The purpose of this letter is to provide an update with respect to events that took place last year and the subsequent planning for the Willoughby Slope schools.
In the winter and spring the School District undertook two community consultations. The first one resulted in the Board of Education submitting to the Ministry of Education a request for a new secondary school on the Willoughby Slope. The District is now working with the Ministry of Education and the Township of Langley on providing necessary information and furthering this request.
The second one related to how to accommodate students in our schools in light of the rapid growth on the Slope. As a result, it was determined that the current configuration of schools would remain as is (K-5, 6-8, 9-12) and that plans would then be put in place to accommodate students in schools on the Willoughby Slope. The initial steps in this plan will begin this fall with an evaluation of catchments and an exploration of potential catchment changes for the 2017-18 school year. In addition, the Yorkson Creek Middle School community will be invited to work closely with district staff and the Board of Education to explore programming options as well as the use of space within that school.
Communities will be kept apprised of the process through administrators, newsletters, PAC meetings, community meetings and the District’s social media sites.
Thank you for your ongoing support and I look forward to continuing to work with your community.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Hoffman
Superintendent of Schools
