U-Connect applies passions to powerplays

April 25, 2019

The first ever U-Connect Entrepreneurship fair took place April 23. For many of the students of Mr. Chien’s grade 9 class, it was a way they could turn their passions into marketable wares.

The learning began with the involved process of constructing a product. Students first constructed a product proposal based on an idea. They submitted it for peer review, having the other students discuss the viability of their product. They would then make adjustments to create something that people would want to purchase. The process took place over two months.

Of course, part of their earnings went towards a local charity.

One student, who works as a hawker’s assistant, dedicated her work towards the care of birds of prey. Her products were hawk related bookmarks, and tote bags made of recycled plastics.

Another pair of students who are passionate about their artwork, turned their creative exploits into magnets, stickers, and keychains.

For some students, it the program helped them break out of their shell. One student who sold out of her product, shone in “explaining her product and giving clear spoken instructions,” said teacher Jerry Chien. Normally, she would be the quietest kid in class.
