Tilting training and medieval games at Walnut Grove

Nothing builds teamwork better than creating a phalanx to defend against an onslaught of dodgeballs. Medieval shield defence formations was just one of the drills done by the Grade 8 French Immersion class at Walnut Grove last Thursday.

The Society of Tilt and Lance Cavalry (STALC) visited the school last week, just one stop on a round of visits to many of the high schools in the district. Presenter Ian Darvill with his assistant Tiana took the kids through drills in spear formations, archery, and donning and doffing armour.

They were also given a session on ’tilting’ which is the original name for the sport of jousting. The kids learned just how heavy a jousting lance is while trying to carry it the way a jouster would while riding.
