“SUPER” YOUth Conference at BSS

May 20, 2016

More than 230 students aged 8- 12 descended on Brookswood Secondary on the May 8th pro-d day for an entire day of experiential and hands-on learning that included sessions taught and facilitated by either BSS senior leadership students or BSS staff. The “SUPER” YOUth conference filled up almost immediately in this it’s third year, and offered young students an outstanding experience and early connection to BSS. The BSS leadership students spent months planning the conference preparing, organizing and problem-solving all while growing their skills and confidence – a fantastic learning experience that ties in beautifully with the revised curriculum. The leadership students, led by BSS teacher, Ms Yun, chose the theme, advertised the event to the BSS feeder schools, planned the workshops, made the timetable and built the conference from the ground up.

It’s great seeing the collaboration of the different students involved; from the jocks to the academia to the artsy to the international students…it’s rewarding seeing these different parties come together on their “day off” to showcase Brookswood! As a class, we know that high school can be intimidating and this was our chance to reduce that anxiety for our future “Bobcats”. We wanted to give the elementary kids a fun day at BSS, give them an opportunity to meet fellow students from the other feeder schools for future friendships and of course, provide a service to our community for working parents!
