Seeing Possibilities, Educating Success: Q & A with Mark Leiper, District Principal of our International Student Program
July 23, 2019

The International Student Program (ISP) is celebrating 30 years of education in the Langley School District. We speak with Mark Leiper, District Principal of our International Student Program, to find out more about the program and the impact it has made on our school community.
What is the International Student Program?
Langley School District has been welcoming international students since 1989. The International Student Program offers a wide range of education options which include elementary and secondary programs for students. The program offers an excellent learning environment with a variety of extra-curricular activities, full ESL (English as a Second Language) support (beginner to advanced) and a dedicated International Student Coordinator at each secondary school. In addition to having exceptional programs and teachers, we have our own in-house homestay program.
How many international students do we have and where do they come from?
The program currently has 990 students. A majority of these students attend various secondary schools in the District. The students are from Europe, South America, and Asia.
What are the benefits for international students?
There are so many benefits. To sum up, I would say learning English and the Cultural and Educational experience are the key highlights for our students. We hope that every student is offered a variety of opportunities and achieves success while they are here.
What are the benefits of having international students in our community?
The Langley School District values diversity and our schools foster an inclusive and accepting culture. Our program contributes to that. One of the main benefits for our community is interculturalisation. Our program gives community members the opportunity to meet students from around the world and helps facilitate a cultural exchange.
