REMSS wins $25,000 Staples Contest
April 15, 2016
R.E. Mountain students have won $25,000 in new technology through the Staples Canada Superpower Your School contest. The nationwide contest was held between December 3rd and January 29th and involved nearly 630 student entrants. The contest was held in collaboration with Earth Day Canada and required schools to submit initiatives that they have implemented in efforts to save the planet. For R.E. Mountain Secondary, the Green Team and the Aquaponics Team led the way with recycling programs including their composting system, water refilling station, Adopt-a-Street and their tree planting. The students of R.E. Mountain have also established a student-led conference to discuss environmental issues with other Langley students – the Green Conference was a huge success. The Aquaponics Team donates food to the local food bank as it becomes available via their 100 litre aquaponics system that supports fish which in turn fertilize plants which are then harvested for human consumption. The whole system only requires about 1 cup of fish food monthly.
The students of REMSS were gathered for an assembly and surprised with the news that they had won when it was announced by school administration and Mr Ranj Sehdev, the general manager of the Langley Staples store.
