Our Commitment to the Whole Child Locally and Globally: Langley School District Foundation

August 28, 2019

The Langley School District Foundation is hosting one of its largest events of the year: the 14th Annual Golf Tournament. We hear from the Foundation’s Executive Director Susan Cairns who reflects on the purpose of this day and what it means for students in Langley.

This is a timely reminder to participate in the 14th Annual Golf Tournament happening on Wednesday, August 28. Of course, this years’ time on the green, green grass of Redwoods Golf Course promises to be bigger and better than ever. I’m never quite sure what that means, but in my mind, I’m convinced that the people who come out to play; who sponsor our holes, and who donate to the silent auction will ultimately help the Foundation make learning even more UNFORGETTABLE for every Langley student.

We have, thanks to our many sponsors, contributors and participants, been able to contribute more than $10 million over the last 15 years to the Langley School District to support our Food for Thought Campaign to provide nutritious breakfasts, lunches, snacks and backpacks filled with food to our more than 3,000 students who come to school hungry every day. We have also been able to provide counselling services to students who are struggling with mental health issues. This, along with our mandate to make sure that no student is hungry, is part of our commitment to the whole child – their mind, body and spirit.

In so doing, we constantly explore new avenues and innovative initiatives that can help the Langley student thrive and survive. We support entrepreneurial, apprenticeship, summer, film, literacy, sports and arts programs. We are committed to enhancing and promoting global education among our students. We do this through our partnership with PA-MOJA and Ol Pejeta. PA-MOJA, a committee under the auspices of the Foundation works with Ol Pejeta in Kenya to provide scholarships to Kenyan high school students to allow them to graduate from secondary school.

As you can see, the work of the Foundation is far reaching. As education needs change, the Foundation will continue to be nimble in providing support for students locally and globally and look forward to you joining us on that journey.
