New Mural at Douglas Park
April 5, 2016
The new mural will be installed on the front-facing gym wall at Douglas Park Elementary, facing the street. Langley Schools Cultural Presenter and Aboriginal artist Brandon Gabriel was commissioned for the work that will span a large section of the now-plain wall and provide not only a vibrant and colourful art piece but something the students can be proud of. Many students assisted Brandon with preparation of the canvasses and took the opportunity to visit with Brandon during the painting process as this mural was prepared on-site as opposed to a studio. Brandon also felt that this was an advantage as he was able to share with the students and benefit from their connection to the artwork. The mural depicts the animals that are associated with the 7 Sacred Teachings: Love, represented by the Eagle; Respect, represented by the buffalo; Courage, represented by the bear; Honesty, represented by Sabe the giant; Wisdom, represented by the beaver; Humility, represented by the wolf; and Truth, represented by the turtle. Also, there are environmental themes as the world is shown cradled in human hands, to take care of and protect our valuable resources.
