The Langley Heritage Society has donated copies of Canucks in Khaki: Langley, the Lower Mainland and the Great War of 1914 to 1918 written by Langley historian Warren Sommer. Each Langley elementary school will receive one copy while middle and secondary schools will receive two.
Director of the Langley Heritage Society Mr. Jim Foulkes presented the copies of Canucks in Khaki at the Tuesday, September 25th School Board Meeting and the books will be distributed this week. The book includes an introductory letter and teacher resource prepared by the Langley Heritage Society.
An excerpt from the letter of presentation:
November 11, 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World
War. It was a war that changed the world and shaped the character and future of Canada. It also affected community life everywhere in Canada, no less so than in Langley. This book tells the stories and relates the experiences of the men, women and families of Langley who participated in the war in the trenches of Europe and also those who supported the war effort on the home front. As students and teachers think about the impacts of war and consider the history of global conflict, it is important to also reflect on community impacts and local sacrifices. Canucks in Khaki provides insights into Langley’s heritage and brings personal experiences of one hundred years ago to life.
