Coghlan gives generously to the Aldergrove Food Bank
December 19, 2018
For the last few weeks, Coghlan Fundamental Elementary has been gathering troves of food. It began with their Christmas Craft Fair in late November. Entry was paid with a small donation. All food collected was in donation to the Aldergrove Food Bank.
PAC President Shelley Wutke then put forward the idea to ‘deck the halls’. For each piece of food donated a link in a paper chain was made. The aim was to make the chain as long as possible. The visual aid was huge for the kids. They loved seeing it grow, and were greatly encouraged in their donations as a result.
December 18 was the final day for donations, and by then the school had already collected 559 pieces of food. That meant the paper chain wrapped around the entire entrance way and extended down one of the hallways. However, one last call that morning pushed the collection to well over 600 food items.
Everything was then loaded into several vehicles with the help of several Grade 7 volunteers, as well as some parent helpers and Principal Cathy Gracie and her family.
The food was delivered to the Aldergrove Food Bank, and the staff there were overwhelmed with how much food there was! The Grade 7 volunteers took the time to sort the food, preparing it for distribution to those who need it.
It was a great effort, all around. Great work, Coghlan on such an amazing act of kindness!
