Building Community on Halloween

November 1, 2023

Black and pink seemed to be the colours of the season for this Halloween. There were the traditional costumes like ghosts and pirates, but Barbie and the Adams Family inspired outfits were trending all over the District. The themed clothing along with activities and parties helped bring connection and build community in schools and District sites.

At Peterson Road Elementary, students paired up with their little and big buddies to carve pumpkins and grow friendships. The pumpkin buddies activity was a learning opportunity that lets the students have fun while building community.

“The kids really look forward to it,” said Shelley McKinnon, teacher at Peterson Road Elementary. “They love creating the relationships in the school during our buddy time but also outside on the playground or even in the community,” she added.

Halloween costume parades, ‘guess the pumpkin weight’, pumpkin patch picking, and spooky dances were among the activities organized at school communities this week.

At the school board office, District departments dressed in theme, categories included ‘Barbie’, ‘Disney’ tourists, The ‘Price is Right’ and ‘Ghostbusters.’ It was a frightfully fun day for all!
