Superintendent’s Report

Amended Annual Budget Bylaw 2018-2019

Amended Annual Budget Bylaw 2018-2019 – The Board of Education passed the amended annual budget for 2018-2019. Assistant Secretary-Treasurer Shind Chand gave an overview of the amended budget.  He noted some revenue changes since the preliminary budget passed last spring. Changes included increases to the operating grant and international tuition.  Correspondingly, expenses increased for things like services, supplies and utilities which led to a deficit position. To balance the budget, roughly $821,000 from surplus was added. The video above will begin on this agenda item.

BC Tripartite Education Agreement

BC Tripartite Education Agreement – District Principal for Aboriginal Education Mike Pue gave an update on the BC Tripartite Education Agreement (BCTEA). This is an agreement between the federal, provincial and First Nations Education Steering Committee which is an advisory group for all First Nations around the province. It aims to set the foundation for further growth and changes to support the growth of the BC First Nations education system, and ultimately improve outcomes for Aboriginal students. The BCTEA was signed on January 23, 2019. Some of the ongoing work being done include a push for Local Education Agreements with local First Nations, a transportation plan for Aboriginal students, one pro-D centred around First Nations education. The video above will begin on this agenda item.

Professional Growth Plans

Professional Growth Plans – Assistant Superintendent Woody Bradford gave a presentation on Professional Growth Plans for principals and vice-principals in the District. The purpose of these plans is to strengthen leadership needed to ensure success in students. This framework was created in 2016 and is being used as an example for other school districts. As part of the process, principals and vice-principals come up with professional and personal goals which are discussed with Assistant Superintendents. Staff log their progress online by capturing things like student learning, professional learning, and measurement. The plans enable staff to self-reflect on their work, foster mentoring relationships, develop professionally, and in turn to help meet the needs of students. The video above will begin on this agenda item.

District Calendars for 2019/2020, 2020/2021 and 2021/2022

District Calendars for 2019/2020, 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 – The Board of Education has passed a motion requesting District staff to begin the consultation process for the District Calendars for 2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022. The Board of Education approves these District Calendars subject to minor revisions based on feedback received as a result of the 30-day consultation. The process to make comments will be shared on the District website and social media channels. Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Barry Bunyan presented the three calendars to the board outlining things like instructional dates, non-instructional dates, stat holidays and winter and spring breaks. It is noted that these are basic calendars that do not include details.  Specific calendar information will be presented to the Board in April. The video above will begin on this agenda item.

The Board invites members of the public to provide feedback on these District Calendars by March 28. Please send comments to the Secretary-Treasurer’s office by emailing: lmason@sd35.bc.ca.
