Celebrating Mother Language Day and Literacy in Langley Schools
February 16, 2023

With more than 100 languages spoken in the homes of students and staff across Langley Schools, the District is celebrating International Mother Language Day in a unique way. United Nation’s International Mother Language Day, which falls on February 21, “recognizes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and the Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind.”
As part of the District’s ongoing goal to celebrate diversity and inclusion, we are highlighting this day and sharing online resources with families to help promote literacy at home, no matter what language is spoken. These resources which have been curated by District English Language Learners’ (ELL) Staff enable families to engage in literacy in multiple languages such as French, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Russian, Punjabi and many more.
Unite for Literacy provides free digital access to picture books, narrated in many languages.
