What You Will Find

Contained in this section is information on Provincial Assessments from the Ministry of Education – the Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) and the Graduation Assessments (Numeracy 10, Literacy 10, Literacy 12).

Provincial Assessments

Provincial assessments are changing to align with the new curriculum. They provide a snapshot of student performance in key areas and, over time, can help to monitor key outcomes of B.C.’s education system.

B.C.’s provincial assessments remain rigorous and based on learning standards to evaluate student achievement, Core Competencies, and literacy and numeracy skills.

Foundation Skills Assessment

The Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) is an annual assessment of students’ reading, writing and numeracy skills.  FSA is B.C.’s earliest provincial indicator of student performance and provides strong evidence of future student achievement. The FSA is the first time a student writes a provincial assessment and is written by all students in Grades 4 and 7.

The purpose of the FSA is to:

  • Provide system level information on student performance
  • Provide districts and schools with information on student performance.
  • Support decision making (interventions, planning, resource allocation, curriculum, policy, research)

Students in Langley write the FSA at their home school during regular instructional time.  The window for FSA assessments in grades 4 & 7 for the 2023/2024 school year will be October – November 2023. FSA results will be sent home to parents in December 2023 but these results are not included in a student’s school assessment or reporting results.

For more information on the FSA, visit the British Columbia Ministry of Education website.

Graduation Assessments

Graduation assessments are changing to align with the new curriculum. As part of the updated graduation requirements, students in the B.C. Graduation Program will complete three provincial assessments. These assessments focus on the demonstration and application of numeracy and literacy.  Please see the specific pages for more detailed information about each assessment.

Students can access their results from the “Graduation Assessment” link after logging into their account on the Student Transcripts Service at: www.studenttranscripts.gov.bc.ca.

Grade 10 Numeracy Assessment

The Grade 10 Numeracy Assessment is a provincial assessment that assesses student proficiency in numeracy. It is a graduation requirement and students take the assessment in their Grade 10 year.  The Grade 10 Numeracy Assessment focuses on the application of mathematical concepts learned across multiple subjects from kindergarten to Grade 10. It requires  students to solve problems by using five numeracy processes (different ways of thinking and working): interpret, apply, solve, analyze and communicate. Parents and students can learn more about the Numeracy 10 Assessment, including sample assessments that students can practice on, at the link below:

Grade 10 and Grade 12 Literacy Assessments

The Grade 10 Literacy Assessment is a provincial assessment that assesses student proficiency in literacy.  It is a graduation requirement and students take the assessment in their Grade 10 year.

The Grade 12 Literacy Assessment is a provincial assessment that assesses student proficiency in literacy. It is a graduation requirement and students take the assessment in their Grade 12 year.

The Grade 10 and 12 Literacy Assessments assess student ability to use critical thinking and analysis to make meaning from a diverse array of texts. It also assesses the ability of students to communicate their ideas. The Grade 10 and 12 Literacy Assessments are not based on a particular course, but on learning across multiple subjects, from kindergarten to Grade 12.
