Langley School District Supports Wearing Orange Shirts – Week of Monday, May 31, 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Staff,
In follow-up to last Friday’s message regarding Truth and Reconciliation, the District is encouraging students, staff and community members to wear an orange shirt in honour and remembrance of the 215 children who lost their lives at the Residential School in Kamloops. Wearing an orange shirt is a way to honour the survivors of residential schools and those that did not return. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of residential schools and the legacy they have left behind. It is one of many ways to demonstrate support and action as we move forward on our District’s Truth and Reconciliation journey. With limited time provided for students, staff, and families to plan, wearing an orange shirt at any point this week and beyond is encouraged. Our hope is for schools and families to reinvigorate discussions about the meaning behind the wearing of orange shirts during this time.
As well, the District will be lowering flags to half-mast at all SD35 sites. The half-masting will occur beginning Monday, May 31st until an end period to be determined.
