Heritage Fair at JKE

Grade 5 students at James Kennedy Elementary began the season of Langley Heritage Fairs. Participating students have spent the last few months preparing their presentations, displays, and write-ups discussing periods in Canadian history they were interested in exploring. Displays included topics such as the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, the national flag, breeds of Canadian dog, Residential Schools, First Nation’s culture and art, WWII, and many others.

Volunteers, including members of the Langley Heritage Society, Trustees, MSA Museum staff judged the event, looking to send several JKE students on to the Langley District Heritage Fair later this year.

Heritage Fairs are designed to, according to the BC Heritage Fairs website, “promote an awareness and understanding of Canadian history and heritage among students and adults in the province of BC”. The fairs are not a competition, but students that excel in their presentation can go on to represent Langley in the provincial Heritage Fair hosted at UFV later in the year.
