Respect & Diversity Week February 26 – March 2

Langley Schools will be taking part in all kinds of different activities as part of Respect & Diversity Week including many wearing pink on Tuesday. Respect & Diversity Week is organized locally and students and staff all over the district will be taking part in events that highlight cultures of the world, promote peace, respect for each other, inclusion and other positive themes as we foster an inclusive and accepting culture across the district.
Below, Fern Gabriel teaches us the correct pronunciation of sǝýeḿstǝxw which means ‘respect’ in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓.
School Activities
Students at Willoughby Elementary enjoyed a multicultural assembly on March 2, which included Bhangra dancing, wearing a Sari, and class performances of Scottish dances, as well as a song. The event took place under a massive rainbow, representing the different cultures and peoples across the globe. The rainbow was painted with the handprint of every student at the school.
At the end of the assembly, students were given Metis sash bracelets, hand crafted by other students at the school.
On Monday, February 26, students participated in a yarn activity focusing on diversity and building classroom community. Students passed around a ball of yarn, and all shared one positive thing about the student they passed to. This way they learned that, even though they are all different, they are all connected in one way or another.
