Junior Leadership students help Nicomekl build student community

November 22, 2017

Brookswood Secondary’s Junior Leadership team visited Nicomekl Elementary on November 17 to engage Grades 3 to 5 students in a series of community building activities. Classes came out in blocks to partake in several organized activities, such as hockey, soccer, crafts, and various other ‘ice-breaker’ style games. The games and lessons were designed to bring students together, giving all students a chance to play together and get to know one another.

The Junior Leadership team, led by District Teacher Lenny Yun, stepped in to break down barriers between classmates. Guided lessons, taught by the Junior Leadership team, taught students about kindness and bullying. Students opened up to the discussion, offering their own thoughts and feelings.

The goal of the day was inclusion, to invite everyone into their play — including new refugee students. As the students participated in the day’s activities, it was clear that not one student was left on their own.
