Everybody Has a Role to Play

British Columbia schools strive to develop positive and welcoming school cultures, and are committed to fostering optimal environments for learning. Members of these school communities share a commitment to maintaining safe, caring and orderly schools. They focus on prevention of problems and use school-wide efforts to build “community,” fostering respect, inclusion, fairness, and equity. They set, communicate, and consistently reinforce clear expectations of acceptable conduct. They teach, model and encourage socially responsible behaviours that contribute to the school community, solve problems in peaceful ways, value diversity and defend human rights.

Safe & Inclusive Schools

Langley students have a right to expect respect and a safe education. This page refers to, or links to, resources that parents and students can access if they are concerned about issues such as harassment, bullying or violence in or around schools.

SOGI Information for Parents

SOGI stands for sexual orientation and gender identity. SOGI 123 has provided a great resource for parents that wish to learn more about how BC’s Curriculum addresses inclusion and gender identity topics in schools. Parent resources for SOGI 123 are available here.

More information about BC’s curriculum can be found here: Physical & Health Education: Curriculum Connections & SOGIPhysical Health & Education FAQs.

Administrative Procedure 170 – “Anti-Harassment & Anti-Discrimination”

Administrative Procedure 170 – “Anti-Harassment & Anti-Discrimination” is a procedure that strives to protect students from harassment and discrimination. School communities have an opportunity to educate students about inclusion and respect for all individuals. In keeping with building a positive school culture and climate, this procedure provides a framework for fostering social responsibility in Langley Schools.

A portion of Administrative Procedure 170 reads: “Any communication or behaviour (which may include but is not limited to assault, bullying or harassment) that deliberately degrades, denigrates, labels, stereotypes, incites hatred, prejudice and discrimination towards students on the basis of one’s real or perceived sexual or gender orientation, appearance, capacity, disability, ethnicity or religion, or for any other reason, will not be tolerated. This also includes making gestures, publishing or displaying anything that would indicate an intention to discriminate against an individual or group, or expose them to contempt or ridicule.”

All members of the school community, including students, staff, parents/guardians, volunteers and trustees are expected to uphold this procedure in the interest of student safety and well-being. The full document text, which includes the student harassment written complaint process, is attached to this page or can be found by visiting our policies and regulations page. If you have any questions or concerns please contact your school.

Violence Threat Risk Assessment Protocol

Violence Threat Assessment Protocol: All threats and high-risk behaviour will be taken seriously and investigated to ensure the safety of all students and staff. All members of the school community are expected to report threats or other unsafe behaviours to responsible adults. The Langley School District actively uses “Violent Threat Risk Assessment Protocol” (VTRA) to ascertain whether or not students pose a threat to themselves or others. Members of the school community are made aware of this protocol through the Fair Notice Poster that is displayed in all school sites as well as in student agendas.

Restorative Action

Whether you are a parent, teacher or student, you want school to be a safe and healthy place. Conflict in social settings like schools is normal and natural, but unresolved conflict causes harm and uncertainty. Restorative Action is a way of understanding conflict, harm, and justice. Restorative Action responds to conflict and harm in our schools, while proactively developing skills for building and maintaining relationships. For more information on Restorative Action in schools please visit: Restorative Action
